Short Story

In the September 26,2005 issue of “The New Yorker” this short story, “The Kidney-Shaped Stone That Moves Every Day” written by Haruki Murakami reveals what love really means. In this story the main character named Junpei has three chances to find the women that really means something to him. His father had given him that advice and every time Junpei met a girl he would always wonder if this girl was one of the three.
Well he had finally given up on all hopes of finding someone, when he met this woman named Kirie. She was interesting to Junpei although he didn’t know why. But just like all the others, he wondered if she was one of the three.
At first she was just a girl who he went to dinner with and who he enjoyed sleeping with. But one night they got into a deep conversation about one of his stories. Junpei is a short story writer and he had been working on one. When she asked what it was about, Junpei paused because he was debating whether or not to tell her because he normally tells no one about his stories until they are completely finished. But he decided she was special so he described the story in detail to her. It was at that very moment that he realized she was one of the three women that would truly mean something to him.
After explaining what little bit of the story he had, the next morning and five days after, he did nothing but work on the short story. He titled the story “ The Kidney-Shaped Stone That Moves Every Day.” It is about a doctor who is having an affair with a married man. Then she finds this stone that she becomes very close to. So close she begins talking to it. But then after finding the stone that is shaped like a kidney, weird things started happening. The stone would appear in different places. She knows no one could have moved it because her office was locked when she wasn’t in it. Then in the end she decided to throw the stone in the lack, the next morning it was back on her desk.
After Junpei finished the story he tried to get a hold of her but her phone had been disconnected. He thought she would call; it had been a few months and not a single phone call. So he deiced to wait six months to see if she would try to reach him and after those six months are over he would forget about her and move on with his life. Well the six months were over and not one phone call. I enjoyed this story. From the start it was a little slow but as it got going it really turned out enjoyable. It really makes you think, is there really only three important people that will mean something to me. Not girls of course, but guys. Will there only be three guys that I date that will really mean something to me? And will one of those three be the one I will live with forever? If you have a chance to read this story, well I recommend you do.

It could happen to you!

After, reading this story, “The Girl with the Blackened Eye” I had to think that this could easily happen to anyone. It could happen to me. That scared me, just to think that I could have been that girl with the blackened eye, the one who had been beaten and raped and nearly starved to the point of death. This story showed me that I should never be alone anywhere even if it is in the daylight, because some people have the nerve to do such cruel things even with the chance of other people witnessing his torture.

This story is very similar to the other story I read by this author, “Where are you going? Where have you been?” That story is about a girl like the one in this story who is around the age of fifteen. In both the stories there is an enemy towards both the girls and that enemy just happens to be older males. Ones who appear to be friendly, then when they have you they change in a split second. There is also a similar theme to the stories. The theme is something on the lines of a sexual predator. The males are the sexual predators and the girls are their prey.

So when you are in a store or at the movies hanging out with your friends remember that they are everywhere, the sexual predators I mean. And don’t think that just because it happened to someone else that is won’t happen to you. Think twice about who you smile to when you are just trying to be nice, they may take it the wrong way.

Being a Teenager!!!!

Wow! Being a teenager is so hard. I don’t even know where to start. Well let’s start here, the worst thing about being a teenager is all the drama and rumors. You can say one thing to someone and make them promise not to tell anyone and by the end of the day, the whole student body will know the one secret you were promised would not be repeated. Then there is DRAMA! Oh my gosh, this year especially, there has been so much. It is like everyday there is more and more. Mostly my problem is with boys. There is so much drama there. You see I try and not like anyone because guys always get me down and I always get in a bad mood. But when I try to not like anyone I find myself liking the guy more and more. And now there is a problem because I like this boy and I see him in school because he is in the same grade as me, but then I think I may like his best friend to. But his best friend I never see, only on the weekends, because he is in college. And when I try to talk to this boy he is always putting me down and telling me to stop acting differently because he doesn’t think I like him, he thinks I like his best friend. But when I tell him I like him he doesn’t understand. Boys never understand anything!!! Well that is almost all the drama going on right now. I will update you as soon as I have some more!

Sports!

Sports are a big thing to me. My definition of sports would be something that involves teamwork, something that has some physical work involved and something that you compete in. You have both winners and losers in the theme of sports. The only sport I play and the only sport I love would have to be volleyball. Volleyball is very important to me and I believe it is of significance to me as well. It is significance because volleyball teaches me to always do the unthinkable. Always look optimistic and to always do my best. Volleyball makes me set goals for myself and when I achieve those goals that is when I go above and beyond anything I thought I wasn’t able to achieve.

But volleyball or any sport for that matter is not just significance to me, but to all teenagers. A sport to teenagers gives them something to look forward to. It shows them that they are important and that they do have a place in the world. Teenagers sometimes get depressed and get down, I should know because I am a teenager. But it is the sport that picks them right back up, because in a certain sport you can practice and practice and eventually you will succeed. You will improve yourself and that in return makes you feel 100 times better.

Is it your fault or the companys?

Is obesity an individual’s fault or is it the company’s? Well that is a very hard question to answer because people can argue both ways. See I am one of those people. Yes I do indeed think that the fast food company’s are a major problem with the increased obesity that America is facing today. And I understand how they are targeting the younger kids making everyone think that their product is healthy and all around enjoyable. But then they argue that they are not the problem, that it is the individuals fault.
I can see where they are coming from. The fast food industry is very sneaking and persuasive. But on the other hand people do know that their food is not healthy. At least everyone has had to of read some kind of statistic stating that the fast food industry is the problem. According to Morgan in the movie he directed and produced, “Supersize Me,” he states lots of statistics saying that any fast food joints specifically McDonalds is horrible for your health. It damages the liver, could cause heart failure and other symptoms that are life threatening. So if you are considered one of the “obese” think before you eat. Think about what you are putting into your body every time you visit a fast food restaurant.

The role i am most proud of!

There are many roles that I am proud of being. But the role that I am most proud about being would have to be that of a friend. I disagree with people who say that the only support system is your family. They are wrong. Your friends provide a tremendous about of support. You can go to them when something is bothering you because they know what you are going through. They are going through the same thing. I am so proud about being a friend because very often it is me who my friends come to for advice about boys or whatever else is on their mind.
It makes me feel good when a friend comes up to me and says, "Sam I need your advice." Or "Sam I need your help, can you help me?" It makes me feel like I am worth something. Like without me my friends wouldn't know what to do when it came to those subjects that I am very knowledgeable about. I have a lot of friends and try to be the best friend I can, because that is what I want out of them. I want them to be the best friends to me. So when you think about people you look to for support or just people who you can talk to, don't just think about your family, think about your friends. Although your family may know you the best they might not have the best insight for your specific problem or concern.
